Private Amalfi Drive and Pompeii
After meeting your professionally-trained guide, you will board your transportation and drive up the narrow road from the pier up to the town of Sorrento, perched on the cliffs above. Admire the dolomite cliffs, towering straight up out of the sea and typical villages, which have characterized Sorrento's Peninsula for many centuries. Pause for a photo opportunity at a vantage point to admire the fascinating coast. Drive along the steep winding coastal road passing Positano, a pretty fishing village, which has become something of a colony of artists and writers.
The picturesque seaside resort of Amalfi lies at the mouth of a deep gorge. It is one of the most popular holiday resorts in Italy. As a sea power, Amalfi played an important role in the Middle Ages. Amalfi was part of the four Maritime Republics that included Venice, Genoa, and Pisa. You will have free time on your own to take photos and stroll along the narrow streets to the Piazza del Duomo. From this square, a flight of 60 + steps leads to the impressive Cathedral of St. Andrew. The interior of the church dates as far back as the 13th century with the highlight of the cathedral being the 11th-century bronze doors from Constantinople.
You will wind your way along the Amalfi Coast passing by Vietri sul Mare onto the autostrada towards the ancient city of Pompeii. Ironically, one of the ancient world's worst disasters preserved time in Pompeii, where you will experience life as it was lived in 79 AD. Once a thriving empire 1,900 years ago, it was devastated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD when 30 feet of volcanic ash and pumice stone covered the city. As you enter Pompeii by one of its ancient gates, a short walk takes you to the city's hub, the Forum. Surrounded by lavish temples and porticoes, you'll begin to grasp the lifestyle of the inhabitants. Admire the mansions and the art of wealthy patricians who moved to Pompeii to escape the turmoil of Rome; view countless paintings and inscriptions. See the streets with raised pavements on both sides and the stepping-stones that ensured pedestrians a safe crossing at intersections. After your visit to Pompeii, you will drive back to Sorrento following the Bay of Naples.
On your return to Sorrento, those guests wishing to end their tour above in the town of Sorrento may do so. They will then be responsible for getting down to the tender pier via either a taxi or walking.
Due to the crowds at Pompeii and on the Amalfi Drive, the itinerary may be altered. All sites mentioned will be visited. Lunch will be taken at a restaurant near Pompeii.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and sensible, closed toe walking shoes. If you are planning to visit a religious site during free time, your shoulders and knees should be covered. Sunscreen and sun glasses are suggested.
Restrictions
Guests must be able to walk approximately 2.5 miles over cobblestones and uneven surfaces, steep inclines and steps. Guests should be in good physical condition with the ability to walk uphill or climb stairs for extended periods of time. The tour itinerary may be reversed but always covering the mentioned sights. Heavy traffic congestion should be anticipated and may affect the duration of the excursion. Pompeii is not wheelchair accessible and cannot be viewed from the entrance. There is a steep incline at the entrance of Pompeii with 20 to 25 steps.

Prior to joining Abercrombie & Kent, Mr. Miller held a variety of executive positions with Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises for more than a decade. These positions included Vice President of Guest Sales & Service, Vice President of Brand Development, and Vice President of Onboard Revenue (which included shore excursions). Mr. Miller also led Celebrity Expeditions, a collection of outstanding and unique tours around the World.
Michael Bonner
Mr. Bonner has over a decade of experience working in the cruise industry in a variety of roles for both Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and Viking River Cruises. Most recently, Mr. Bonner was the Chief Operating Officer for The Scholar Ship, a Royal Caribbean program aimed at providing college students onboard educational programs in conjunction with enriching shore excursions around the world. Mr. Bonner also helped co-manage Viking River Cruises U.S. Operations, and he ran the corporate, strategic, and deployment planning functions at Royal Caribbean.
